IT Assessment

An IT assessment is a process of evaluating the information technology systems, processes, and infrastructure of an organization. The goal of an IT assessment is to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement in the company’s IT environment. It typically involves a detailed analysis of the company’s current IT systems and infrastructure, an evaluation of its cybersecurity protocols, and an assessment of its ability to meet its current and future business needs.

There are several reasons why companies need to perform an IT assessment. One of the primary reasons is to ensure that their IT systems are up-to-date, secure, and able to support the organization’s strategic objectives.

An IT assessment can also help identify potential risks and vulnerabilities, such as cyber threats or compliance issues, and provide recommendations for addressing these risks.

Lastly, it can identify hidden or forgotten systems and networks that were left over from other projects and are still running, or departmental systems that are outside the purview of the IT organization.

Steps in an IT Assessment

The steps involved in an IT assessment methodology may vary depending on the specific needs and goals of the company. However, some common steps in the IT assessment process include:

  • Defining the scope and objectives of the assessment: This involves defining the purpose and goals of the IT assessment, as well as determining the scope of the assessment and the specific areas that will be evaluated.
  • Gathering and Analyzing the data: This involves collecting data and information about the company’s IT systems and processes, including network infrastructure, software applications, security protocols, and data management practices. Analysis includes identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
  • Findings and recommendations: Based on the analysis of the data, the IT assessment team will develop recommendations for improving the company’s IT systems and processes, including cybersecurity protocols and data management practices.
  • Developing an action plan: Based on the recommendations and findings of the assessment, the company will develop an action plan to address any identified issues and improve its IT systems and processes.

Examples of how IT assessments are being used today include: when and where to improve operations, processes, and technologies; skills sets to run and manage the ever increasing complex platforms, networks and systems; and, compliance to federal, state, industry regulations and ways to meet those regulations.

Overall, an IT Assessment is a critical process for any organization looking to ensure that their IT systems are secure, up-to-date, and aligned with their strategic business objectives.

IT Assessment Skills

  • Technical expertise: We have a deep understanding of IT systems and processes, including hardware, software, network infrastructure, and data management practices.
  • Analytical skills: We are able to analyze data and information to identify potential risks and vulnerabilities, as well as areas for improvement.
  • Communication skills: We communicate complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Project management skills: We manage the IT assessment project from start to finish, including defining the scope and objectives, gathering information, analyzing data, developing recommendations, and presenting findings to stakeholders.
  • Industry knowledge: We understand several industries as well as the many regulatory and compliance requirements that may apply.
  • Problem-solving skills: We are able to identify potential challenges and obstacles that may arise during the IT assessment project and develop effective strategies for overcoming them.
  • Collaboration skills: We are also able work effectively with members of the company’s IT team and other stakeholders to ensure that the IT assessment project is successful.

Work Examples

Public Health Network

  • GOAL Identify all computers, networks and applications throughout the city-owned healthcare system to reduce costs and integrate functionality.
  • RESULT Mapped out more than 2000 networks and applications used in addition to a mixture of personal computers and other devices. Developed a plan to sunset many of the systems over 18 months and integrate others into a newly defined architecture to be run by the CIO.

Paper Production

  • GOAL Identify all networked devices throughout the environment, from tree harvesting through delivery of fine paper products, to reduce costs and schedule a system-wide upgrade.
  • RESULT Discovered 30+ platforms that were not known and were inefficiently using network technologies causing system delays through the network. Developed a plan to incorporate that system functionality into the upgrade which was realized over the following 18 months.

Expansion of Health Network

  • GOAL Map existing network to be upgrade and extended to newly purchased facilities in a growing health network.
  • RESULT Developed quick-connect implementations of new buildings followed by a long term integration, lower cost, infrastructure to allow for full access to all healthcare applications network-wide. Due to the location we also implemented redundancy to allow continued operations during natural disasters.
